Screening, surface and depth filtration: choosing the mechanism

Compare screening, depth and pleated media through contaminants, cake formation and ingredient preservation rather than element shape alone.

Separate contaminants from useful ingredients

Metal chips in rinse water and useful pigment are both solids but have different targets. Define removal and preservation before size, shape and concentration.

Soft or irregular material can deform and bridge openings. Clarity is not a universal process goal.

Surface capture and cake formation

Surface filtration retains material at or near the surface. Deposits can contribute to retention while increasing resistance. Size, compressibility and adhesion mean equal solids mass can produce different pressure trends.

For cleanable designs, assess performance recovery, not just visible cleanliness.

How depth media use their structure

Depth media capture within a fibrous or porous thickness. Density and channel structure influence loading distribution. Depth does not universally mean finer or longer-lasting.

Compare loading and pressure trends for the actual contamination; gels and formulation preservation still need actual-fluid assessment.

Pleats, bags and cartridges describe construction

Pleating expands area within a volume; bag and cartridge describe element form. Different forms can use different media, so compare efficiency, area, support and sealing.

The housing contains the element and connects the flow path. Its series name alone does not determine retention performance.

When staged filtration is worthwhile

A first stage should remove the load it handles effectively, leaving the final quality task downstream. Compare final-element life, total resistance, consumables, loss and maintenance.

Test single-stage and staged arrangements on comparable fluid and complete batches. Judge accepted throughput and total cost rather than one element’s lifetime alone.
